  1. When to enable/disable Windows XP's automatic wireless configuration feature and use Xterasys' wireless LAN utility to control my wireless network card ?
    (back to FAQ)

If the OS is Windows XP SP2, then it is a good idea to use Windows to control the wireless network card. To do so, simply uninstall Xterasys' wireless LAN utility, then restart your PC. For all other Windows OS, including Windows XP SP1, always use Xterasys' wireless LAN utility to control the device.

To enable/disable Windows XP's automatic wireless configuration:

    1. Go to "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network and Internet Connections" (If Category View) -> "Network Connections"

    2. Right-click "Wireless Network Connection" -> "Properties"

    3. Choose "Wireless Networks" tab, uncheck "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" to disable, and vice-versa.

    4. Click "OK", then close "Network Connections" window

  2. My wireless network card is causing my Windows XP to lock up, go into blue screen, reboot !
    (back to FAQ)

    The affected products are XN-2422G, XN-2423G, XN-2522G, & XN-2523G.
This problem can easily be fixed by updating to the latest driver/utility:

    1. Go to http://www.xterasys.com/drivers.htm, and download the latest driver/utility base on the wireless card's FCC ID, which is on the back of the card.

    2. Open the new download, and unzip into a known location, i.e. C:\

    3. In the unzipped folder, you will find content similar to the CD that comes with the product, i.e. Utility and Driver folders

    4. Before updating with the new download, first make sure the current wireless utility is removed from your system.

    5. For Windows XP SP2, you will not need to install the wireless utility, simply direct Windows to Driver folder (from download) to update driver.

    (back to FAQ)

    Please check the following:

    1. Software; make sure all the software & firmware is up-to-date

    2. Encryption (WEP); if the wireless router/AP is using WEP with Shared Network Authentication mode and Windows XP SP2 is used to control the wireless card/adapter, then it is possible that Open Network Authentication mode is used. To see which mode is used, see below:

      1. Go to "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network and Internet Connections" (If Category View) -> "Network Connections"

      2. Right-click "Wireless Network Connection" -> "Properties"

      3. Choose "Wireless Networks" tab

  7. How to turn my wireless router into a simple wireless access point / wireless repeater ONLY device ?
    (back to FAQ)

Basically, router is not designed to be used as wireless AP ONLY device. But, it is possible to make an Xterasys router into such device.

    1. Log into your router with an Internet browser, i.e. Internet Explorer

    2. Default IP Address is http://192.168.1.254/ or http://192.168.1.1/, and default Username and Password can be found in router's Manual or Quick Installation Guide

    3. Once inside your router's web configuration page, go to Local Port or LAN section

    4. Disable DHCP (Automatically distribute IP Address) function

    5. Do not use the WAN/Internet port of the router, and continue to use LAN/Local ports & WLAN to connect your PC and other network devices

  8. I can go on Internet without using WEP, but with WEP, signal shows excellent, but can't go on Internet !
    (back to FAQ)

Double check the WEP key entered in the router and the device. Be aware of the difference between key and phrase; key is the actual encryption code, phrase is used to generate the actual encryption code.

If the wireless configuration interface (manufacturer's wireless utility, Windows XP's wireless controller, or Internet browser based setup) does not have the option to use phrase, then always use the actual key.

A complete WEP information should contain the following:

    1. Encryption Key Length; 64(40)/128(104)/256 bits

    2. Encryption Key

    3. Network Authentication Mode; Open/Shared

    4. Encryption Key Index #
